The water pump pumps the coolant, which absorbs some of the engine's heat. The pump pumps the extracted fluid to the radiator, which cools it down. The cooled coolant is then returned to the water pump and the cycle starts again. It is very important to detect a fault in time, as driving with a faulty water pump can cause engine overheating.
A metallic noise from where the water pump is installed indicates that the water pump bearing may be damaged. If you see coolant stains under the car, the water pump gasket may be broken.
