Camshafts

The purpose of the camshaft is to control the opening and closing action of the intake and exhaust valves at the right time and moment. The camshaft distributor is responsible for each valve. The shape of the distributors depends on the stroke height of the valve and therefore controls the valves. The camshaft, in the vast majority of cars, is driven by a toothed belt or drive chain. It is also possible to use the shaft separately as a drive for external devices such as the combustion distributor or oil and fuel pumps. In general, camshafts are either cast or forged, the latter being the most commonly used as its shape is very similar and therefore only the bearing housing and positions should be ground after repair.

When is a camshaft defective?

Camshafts placed in plain bearings are often supplied with engine oil for lubrication and cooling. But, despite this, the camshaft can wear and experience material abrasion. In use, individual camshafts wear. This results in changes in valve clearance and control times. Worn camshafts can be identified by a knocking sound and a significant deterioration in engine performance.

Replacing the camshaft

If the camshaft is defective, this is quite serious as it is usually caused by a piston which, at best, damages only the belt itself. In this case, it is sufficient to replace only the camshaft itself. In order to replace the camshaft, the valve head must be removed and then the operation must be carried out in the exact order before the camshaft can be replaced. It is very important to be careful when making the replace. Due to the fact that dropping parts of the car on the ground can mean damage to the material. It is also important to accurately position the shaft ensuring that the bearings are tightened to the correct torque.
